This new edited collection is without a doubt the most comprehensive and in-depth look into the fascinating work and mind of its author's endeavor to situate primal and important questions about religion and science, evolution, the human mind, ecology, and their theological treatments in search for responding and responsible visions of panentheism in the current context of the pressing issues of and for the future of humanity.

Macroevolution, Contingency, and Divine Activity, by Bradford McCall, is one of the most interesting books I have read in a long time. Dealing with important issues about God's involvement in the world, McCall shows an impressive ability to draw on biology, philosophy, history, and theology as partners in the quest for understanding. This is an important book for both seasoned scholars and beginning students. Highly recommended.

Few contest the notion that God is God precisely in being able to redeem the pain and suffering of human history and its innumerable underdetermined actions. This work provides a preliminary account of how an undergraduate degree in biology is being redeemed, through the tragic and fluke circumstances involving traumatic brain injury, for contemporary theology in a scientifically understood world. More precisely, Bradford McCall also invites consideration of how divine redemption of the contingencies over the long arc of evolutionary history is occurring, especially as the latter is narrated in the geological, paleontological, and biological sciences

I consider myself a Christian and practicing catholic (with a lower case “c” meaning the church ecumenical), deeply rooted in my faith while embracing insights from science (particularly evolutionary biology) and philosophy (particularly process philosophy and Thomism). My understanding of God is enriched by the concept of “process” within an evolutionary context, but this does not define my theology. Influenced by thinkers like C. S. Peirce and A. N. Whitehead, I see their ideas as tools rather than doctrines, with my own views aligning closer to process theology than Thomism, but without rigid adherence to any single framework.
I possess a B.S. in Biology from Georgia Southwestern St. University (2000); a Master of Divinity in Biblical Studies from Asbury Theological Seminary (2005); an MA in Church History and Doctrine from Regent University (2012); an MA in Systematic Philosophy from Holy Apostles College & Seminary (2017); an MA in Religious Studies from Claremont School of Theology (2020); and a PhD in Comparative Theology from Claremont School of Theology (2022). I have pursued a multidisciplinary path to deepen my understanding of various fields of inquiry. I am the author of 9 books to date, including 2 as an editor, which have all been published by Wipf & Stock or one of its imprints, with 7 more under contract at Wipf & Stock, and with another 8 in gestation currently. I am grateful for these opportunities to contribute to scholarship widely defined. Notably, my education displays a circuitous route toward ecumenicity.

Exploring the Intersection of Chance, Divine Involvement, and Theology

  • Explores the interplay of chance, divine involvement, and theology through a Peircean epistemological and semiotic framework.
  • Analyzes the Modern Synthetic Theory in evolutionary biology, introducing the concept of the Secular Evolutionary Worldview (SEW).
  • Challenges Laplace’s deterministic view of the universe by implicitly arguing for the presence of the "God of Chance".
  • Examines the coexistence of chance and purpose in the world, drawing theological insight from Philip Clayton and Alister McGrath.
